Verona: Arena #4

Sorry, I'm too busy at the moment to be here every day and to visit your pages... but I'll be back soon... (it sounds like a menace, don't it?  ). Anyway, these pics are of what remain of the outside walls of Arena. At first the walls surrounded the Arena, but in 1177 A.D. an earthquake destroyed the outside walls. This is the original version of the story... but it seems that after the earthquake lot of people used the stones of the outside walls (that were damaged but not as much as we see now) to rebuilt their houses... so it could be that some of the more ancient houses in Verona are built with Arena's stones... they were for sure cheap...
Mi scuso, ma al momento non riesco ad essere qui ogni giorno e a visitare le vostre pagine... ma sarò di nuovo con voi molto presto... (suona come una minaccio, o no? ). Intanto vi propongo queste foto di quello che rimane delle mura esterne dell'Arena. Originariamente queste mura circondavano tutta l'Arena, ma un terremoto nel 1177 le distrusse quasi totalmente. Questa è la versione originale... ma sembra che dopo il terremoto molte persone abbiano usato le pietre delle mura esterne (che erano danneggiate ma non così tanto come le vediamo oggi) per ricostruire le proprie case... così potrebbe essere che alcune delle più antiche case veronesi siano costruite con pietre dell'Arena... sicuramente erano a buon mercato...

Arena was built around A.D 100. Till the fall of Roman Empire it was a place for gladatior fights and funerals with human sacrifices. Many christians died also by torture till A.D. 405 when emperor Onorio prohibited them. From that time till Middle Age the Arena was used rarely and only to execute death penalties. In A.D. 1276 the government declare that prostitutes could work only inside the Arena, so for 2 and half centuries, the Arena became a brothel. Around 1530 A.D. the Arena became the biggest shopping mall of that times ... craftmen and merchants started to work there till... (to be continued... )
L'Arena è stata costruita intorno all'anno 100 D.C. Fino al crollo dell'impero romano era un posto per combattimenti tra gladiatori e funerali con sacrifici umani. Molti cristiani morirono torturati al suo interno fino al 405 quando l'imperatore Onorio proibì questo tipo di attività. Da allora fino al Medio Evo l'Arena fu usata poco e solamente per eseguire condanne a morte. Nel 1276 venne decretato che le prostitute potevano lavorare solo all'interno dell'Arena, così per 250 anni circa, l'Arena diventò un bordello. Nel 1530 circa l'Arena diventò il centro commerciale più grande di quei tempi ... artigiani e mercanti cominciarono a lavorare lì, fino a quando.... (continua... )

The photos I posted of Aida scenography show how much people is ready to believe to what they see, without asking if what they see is reasonable. I don't think that "Egyptian" statues looks like the real ones. The faces are more similar to some friends of the one who did it, than to ancient Egyptian... anyway please enjoy some other pics of Arena scenographies...  
Le foto che ho postato della scenografia di Aida dimnostrano che la gente crede a quello che vede, senza domandarsi se quello che vede è verosimile. Non credo che quelle statue egizie somiglino molto a quelle vere. Le facce sembrano più simili a quelle di qualche amico dell'autore che a quelle di antichi Egizi... comunque eccovi altre immagini delle scenografie areniane...

The amphiteatre of Verona is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved of all ancient Roman amphithetres. The internal dimensions of this elliptical stucture measure 44,5 x 73,58 m. The original Roman tiers were in part destroyed during the Middle Age and subsequentely restored in the 16th century. Today, the amphitheatre of Verona plays host to the city's famous annual opera season: it can accomodate 22.000 spectators, who, given its unique acoustical properties, are able to follow the performance from even the most distant parts of the auditorium without the use of microphones. The amphitheatre of Verona is, in fact, the largest open-air theatre in the world.
But... if you wanna know what operas will be played in the summer, you take a walk around the Arena and you will find the largest open-air depot in the world... yes, is true, we, italians, are funny even in the serious matters... 0)
Non vi traduco tutta la pappardella sull'Arena di Verona, gli italiani la conosco bene... sta di fatto che è comunque il più grande teatro all'aperto del mondo... però... se volete sapere che opere saranno in scena basta farsi un giro attorno ad essa e troverete il più grande magazzino all'aperto del mondo... si, è vero, noi italiani siamo buffi anche nelle cose serie... 0) (soprattutto quel due per cento di elettori che ha votato domenica scorsa per il partito di De Michelis...  )

Beetles meeting #1

In Verona last week there were a Beetles meeting to celebrate the 50th years of the company who distribute VW cars in Italy. So for the next days I will post pictures of these lovely cars, so if you don't like them, come back in 15 days... I never owned a Beetle but I like them also because of their unbelievable colours (other cars with this colours could look ugly, but Beetles don't...  )
A Verona la scorsa settimana si è svolto un raduno di Maggiolini per celebrare i 50 anni di attività della ditta che distribuisce il marchio VW in Italia. Quindi per i prossimi giorni posterò immagini di queste affascinanti macchine, perciò se non vi piacciono tornate fra 15 giorni... Non ho mai posseduto un Maggiolino ma mi piacciono anche per gli incredibili colori (altre macchine con questi colori sembrerebbero orrende, ma i Maggiolini no... )
